Green Schools
Environment Committee of Coláiste Muire
The aim of our committee is to make students, staff and the wider community aware of how their lifestyle choices affect the environment and to ensure that Coláiste Muire remains a green school. A team of enthusiastic, committed students make huge efforts to look at how our school can be more environmentally friendly. We believe every small effort can make a big difference!!
The environment committees have worked throughout the years to achieve the following green school flags:
1. Litter & Waste (Awarded 2008)
2.Energy (Awarded 20011)
3.Water (Awarded 2014)
4.Travel (To be Awarded in 2017)
Coláiste Muire is looking forward to working towards the Biodiversity Flag next year. The Green Schools Programme aims to include all members of the School Community. Parent participation is most welcome. We are open to new ideas and suggestions.
Our school is the first post-primary school in Ennis to achieve green school status. On May 8th 2009, Coláiste Muire was awarded a Green Flag at an official ceremony held in the school. Minister for the Environment, John Gormley T.D. was in attendance.
The current committee meets usually once a week at lunch as they are working on achieving our next flag which will be for Transport. In addition to this the committee continues to work on the other areas that they have already received flags for in order to renew them and to ensure that Coláiste Muire remains as environmentally friendly as possible.
The current Environment Committee has about 15 students involved from 1st year right up to Leaving Certificate!! New members are always welcome. People can get further information from Ms. Catriona Burke (Geography Teacher) and Ms. Susan Griffin (French Teacher). Also, check out Coláiste Muire Green School on Facebook.
